What You Must Know for the Creative Arts Dance Grade 7 Exam
If you are writing the Creative Arts Dance exam in Grade 7, here is what you need to focus on to pass:
- Know your dance vocabulary: Make sure you understand words like locomotor and non-locomotor movements, posture, alignment, space, levels, direction, force, and energy. These will come up in questions or be used in instructions.
- Understand the warm-up and cool-down process: You will be asked about why warming up is important, what exercises are used (like stretches, knee bends, toe-ball-heel landings), and how to cool down safely after dancing.
- Practice dance sequences: Be ready to perform or explain short sequences that include things like jumps, turns, weight transfers, and using the dance space. You may have to describe or reflect on these in writing.
- Learn the elements of dance: These include time (tempo, rhythm), space (levels, shapes, pathways), and force (sharp or smooth movement). Know how to explain them and how they are used in choreography.
- Be familiar with South African dance styles: Examples include gumboot, amapiano, nama stap, and pantsula. You do not need to be an expert, but you must know how these styles look and what makes them unique.
- The written part will test your theory and self-reflection skills. You might be asked to explain how you felt performing a routine, what went wrong or well, or how you used the dance elements in your choreography.
The exam is based on what you learned in class from Term 1 to Term 4. Make sure to go over your worksheets, class journal, and practice routines. You can pass this paper if you understand the vocabulary, movements, safety rules, and how to reflect on your dancing.
What You Must Know for the Creative Arts Drama Grade 7 Exam
The Creative Arts Drama Grade 7 exam tests both your performance skills and your understanding of drama theory. You will be marked on your ability to act, speak clearly, work in a group, and understand how drama works on stage.
Here’s what to focus on if you want to pass:
- Voice and Body Control: You must know how to warm up your voice and body before acting. This includes breathing exercises, posture, and how to use your voice properly (volume, pitch, pause, tone, articulation). These skills are used in both group and solo performances.
- Improvisation and Playmaking: You should be able to make up a short drama scene using a picture, story, or situation as your starting point. The examiner is looking for how you use characters, space, time, movement, and teamwork in your performance.
- Dramatic Elements: Know what each drama element means: character, plot, space, time, audience, and message. You must use these when acting, and also explain them in your written paper.
- Choral Verse and Folktales: In Term 2 and 4, you will perform a choral verse or folktale. Learn how to speak in a group (using rhythm, emphasis, and shared lines), and practise using voice and movement to tell a story clearly.
- Careers in Drama: You will be asked to name or explain careers in the performing arts, like actor, stage manager, drama teacher, lighting technician, or voice coach. You may need to do a short project or written reflection about this.
- Theory Section: The written part of the exam will ask you to define drama terms, reflect on your own acting performance, and answer questions based on a short dramatic text. This includes multiple-choice, short answers, and longer reflections.
- Practical Section: You will be assessed on a live or recorded performance. Make sure you have rehearsed your part well, know your lines, and understand how to use voice and body to show your character clearly.
To prepare, revise your class journal, drama workbook, and any group performance you have practised during the year. The more confident you are with your voice, body, and knowledge of drama terms, the better you will perform.
What You Must Know for the Creative Arts Music Grade 7 Exam
The Creative Arts Music Grade 7 exam has two parts: a written test and a practical music performance. Both are equally important, and each counts 25 marks. Your job is to show that you understand basic music theory and that you can perform simple music confidently.
Here is what you need to focus on to pass the exam:
1. Music Literacy (Written Section)
This is where you show your knowledge of musical notes and reading music. You need to be able to:
- Identify the treble clef and bass clef
- Name notes on the musical staff (A, B, C, D, E, F, G)
- Understand note values like semibreve, minim, crotchet, quaver, semiquaver, and dotted notes
- Read rhythms and clap or count them correctly
- Use tonic sol-fa (do, re, mi…) to sing or recognise a melody
- Recognise things like tempo (fast or slow), dynamics (loud or soft), time signatures (duple, triple, quadruple)
This theory work will be tested in short written questions, diagrams, and maybe some basic music interpretation.
2. Music Listening
You will be asked to listen to a piece of music (live or recorded) and explain things like:
- How many beats are in the music (2, 3, or 4)
- Whether it is fast, slow, happy, sad, a dance, or a march
- What instruments you hear (drums, voice, etc.)
- What the mood or story of the music is
3. Performing and Creating Music (Practical Section)
This part of the exam is all about doing music, not just writing it. You will either perform alone or in a group. You will be marked on:
- How well you can clap or drum a rhythm using the correct note values
- Singing or playing simple melodies using sol-fa or graphic scores
- Performing a song, chant, or instrumental piece that your class created
- Using body percussion, basic classroom instruments, or African drums
- Creating your own sound picture (e.g. storm, rain, dance) using movement and music
4. Your Preparation Matters
To get good marks, you must:
- Know the basic music terms and symbols
- Practise clapping, drumming, and singing patterns with the right timing
- Understand how to read a simple score
- Participate in rehearsals and group work during class
5. Exam Format Summary
- Written Test: 25 marks
Focuses on music literacy, theory, note values, sol-fa, and listening comprehension - Practical Test: 25 marks
Based on class performances, group or solo pieces, body percussion, and musical creativity
If you revise your music workbook, pay attention during listening activities, and practise performing confidently, you will be ready for both parts of the Creative Arts Music Grade 7 exam.
