Term 1 Topics – Agricultural Sciences Grade 11
Under this section you will revise the topics taught in Term 1. These are mostly focused on chemistry and soil science — all examinable in Agricultural Sciences Grade 11 Paper 1.
Key Topics:
- Basic Agricultural Chemistry: Structure of atoms, bonding, acids and bases, ions, molecules
- Chemical Bonding: Covalent and ionic bonding, examples and structural formulae
- Inorganic and Organic Compounds: Water, CO₂, ammonia, table salt, mineral salts
- Alkanes and Alcohols: Simple structures, isomers, uses in metabolism
- Fatty Acids and Lipids: Saturated vs unsaturated, functions in organisms
- Proteins: Structure, amino acids, synthesis, digestion
- Carbohydrates: Sugars, starch, cellulose – structures and uses
- Soil Science: Soil texture and structure, how to classify and test soil
- Soil Colour and Pores: Bulk density, porosity, field methods to assess soil
These topics form the foundation of many Section B questions in Paper 1. Practise structured questions, terminology, and labelled diagrams.
Term 2 Topics – Agricultural Sciences Grade 11
This section focuses on deepening your understanding of soil conditions and environmental interactions. These topics are also examined in Agricultural Sciences Grade 11 Paper 1.
Key Topics:
- Soil Air and Soil Water: Water retention, capillary action, wilting points
- Soil Temperature: Influence on biological activity and crop growth
- Soil Morphology: Soil profiles and horizons (O, A, E, B, etc.)
- Soil Classification: Binomial system and diagnostic horizons
- Soil Colloids and Acidity: Cation exchange, pH scale, active vs reserve acidity
- Soil Alkalinity and Salinity: Sodic soils, brackish soils, prevention methods
- Soil Organic Matter: Micro-organisms, carbon and nitrogen cycles, humus
Be ready for both short-answer and explanation questions. Diagrams and interpretation of data are common in this section of the exam.
Term 3 Topics – Agricultural Sciences Grade 11
Under this section, you will revise all the plant-based content, fertilisers, and plant reproduction. These topics are tested in Agricultural Sciences Grade 11 Paper 2.
Key Topics:
- Photosynthesis: Storage organs, manipulation to increase rate
- Water and Nutrients in Plants: Osmosis, diffusion, transpiration
- Mineral Nutrition: Macronutrients (NPK, Ca, Mg), micronutrients (Fe, Zn, etc.)
- Nutrient Uptake: Active/passive uptake, soil and leaf analysis
- Fertilisers: Organic vs inorganic, calculations, effects on the environment
- Plant Reproduction: Structure of flower parts, pollination, fertilisation
- Fruit and Seed Development: Seed germination, dormancy, scarification
Section B of Paper 2 often draws 2 or 3 questions from this section. Focus on understanding nutrient functions, signs of deficiency, and fertiliser calculations.
Term 4 Topics – Agricultural Sciences Grade 11
This section includes a mix of plant technology, pest management, and resource utilisation. These are all examinable in Agricultural Sciences Grade 11 Paper 2, especially the final questions.
Key Topics:
- Asexual Reproduction: Grafting, biotechnology basics
- Plant Pests and Disease Management: IPM, state involvement
- Optimal Resource Use: Precision farming, soil surveying
- Soil Cultivation and Crop Rotation: Advantages, examples
